Using Technology in Major Criminal Investigations

Instructor:

Michael Swiercz, Detective, Monroe County Sheriffs Office, is assigned to major crimes and complex/advanced criminal investigations and is a member of the department’s Human Trafficking Task Force.  Detective Swiercz has been deemed an expert witness by the court in Cellular Record Analysis and investigations pertaining to Internet Service Providers (ISP) and Social Networking Platforms.

Course Description:

This course is designed for detectives assigned to investigate major/complex criminal investigations or those assigned to a narcotics/surveillance unit or task force. This course will expand the student’s knowledge of electronic records obtained by service providers as evidence related to major cases. Digital/Electronic records have become one of the most prevalent and ever changing pieces of evidence pertaining to major criminal investigations. Students will learn what tools and techniques to utilize that can link suspects to the crimes being investigating.

Topic Includes:

  • Determining/Linking various accounts to criminals
  • Technology/Techniques used to obtain Location Data
  • Reverse Location Searches (tower dumps/geo-fences)
  • Internet Service Providers (ISP)
  • Social Media/Networking Records
  • Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
  • Cloud Storage
  • Search Warrant Standards pertaining to electronic data records.

Required Equipment: Bring a Department issued Laptop (may need the department IT to unlock to download tools/programs).
