Program Addresses Growing Employer Demand in Supply Chain Management
Oakland County Michigan Works!, in partnership with Oakland Community College and PepsiCo, are offering free training to eligible participants interested in joining one of the fastest growing industries in southeast Michigan – certified logistics technicians.
From the automotive industry to e-commerce, job opportunities for logistics professionals are expected to grow four percent annually across the country, including southeast Michigan, through 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Sandra Bachert, OCC director of economic and workforce development, said the Logistics Technician Training Program is a great option for someone interested in launching a career in supply chain management.
“In just 10 short weeks, program participants will obtain two logistics certifications and begin a career pathway in a booming industry in our region,” Bachert said. “Our program includes skill development to get started and placement with a mentor to learn more about the endless career opportunities within the supply chain.”
The Logistics Technician Training Program includes e-learning, hands-on skill training and digital literacy courses covering the following:
-Hazardous Materials Handling
-Global Supply Chain Logistics
-Workplace Communications & Teamwork
To qualify for the training program, a person must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen, 17-24 years-old, and registered with the selective service (if applicable). Upon completion of the Oakland NEXT training program, persons will earn certifications as a Foundational Certified Logistics Associate (CLA) and Mid-Level Technical CLT.
“Logistics professionals are more critical than ever, with supply chains and fulfillment companies delivering record volumes of goods across the world, including our region,” said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter. “This training program is designed to help prepare our future workforce to meet the needs of in-demand fields that provide long-term career paths with plenty of room for growth.”
Oakland County Michigan Works! Director Jennifer Llewellyn said the logistics technician training program is directly aligned with Oakland80, the county’s initiative that calls for 80 percent of eligible residents to have either an advanced certification or educational degree by 2030.
“This is an ambitious goal, but we expect the logistics technician training program and other similar opportunities offered through Oakland County Michigan Works! and partners like Oakland Community College and the private sector will motivate people who qualify to obtain the advanced skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the 21st century in Oakland County,” Llewellyn said.
Oakland County Michigan Works! operates service centers in Novi, Oak Park, Pontiac, Southfield, Troy and Waterford. Combined, they assist more than 105,000 job seekers annually. Services include career coaching, interviewing and job search workshops, placement assistance, training courses and job trend information.
The service centers also assist more than 3,000 employers seeking assistance with talent recruitment, apprenticeship programs, job fairs, candidate pre-screening, hiring and training support, layoff support and labor market data.
Service center staffs remain available by virtual appointment to work one-on-one with job seekers to build their resumes, prepare for job interviews and help address other needs.
