Oakland Community College and Oakland University came together on April 24 to expand upon their many articulation agreements to include a pathway for science students seeking a four- year degree in biology.

Qualified students from Oakland Community College who complete an Associate in Science degree can transfer to Oakland University in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Biology through this new agreement that ensures specific course equivalencies and seamless movement between schools.
“Students who fulfill the requirements of the articulation agreement will only need to complete 48 credits at OU to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and can complete their coursework in as little as three semesters,” said Elaine K. Carey, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oakland University. “Remaining credits outside of the biology mandatory class requirements will consist of electives so that students can pursue their personal interests in a number of different areas.”
As students transfer, they will be eligible for opportunities to gain research and lab experience in areas such as biomedical, ecological and other basic sciences. OCC students who transfer to OU would also be eligible to apply for a summer undergraduate research program that provides funding to work on research for 10 weeks during the summer or participate in BIO 4995 independent research for credit. Honors College students can complete their thesis requirements as part of these biology labs.
In addition, OCC transfer students will be able to take advantage of the BIO Learning Lounge for peer-mentorship and the BIO Journey program for preparation of life after graduation. During their time at OU, they will also be able to engage with various OU student organizations and activities related to the biology program, and beyond that, will also fulfill the CAS Advantage which develops essential academic and professional skills.
“This marks another milestone in our great partnership with Oakland University and we never take this relationship for granted,” said Jennifer Berne, Ph. D., Provost at Oakland Community College. “Our collaboration ensures smooth and successful transitions for our associate degree graduates to bachelor’s degree programs that are held close to our campuses. That’s very powerful for our students.”
The new articulation agreement runs through August 31, 2029.
Oakland University and Oakland Community College continually look for ways to create clear pathways for students at both schools, helping them maximize student success while saving money and time to degree.
Both schools believe that every student deserves the opportunity for an exceptional, affordable education. As part of that commitment, Oakland University offers a number of scholarship opportunities for community college transfer students.
