OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – The Highland Lakes Library added a special collection of books aimed to promote
diversity and inclusion in the OCC community. You won’t need your raider ID to check
out these books…. Just a few minutes and conversation to speak with the ‘human’ author.
How many opportunities have you taken to learn by walking in someone else’s shoes? That’s exactly what the Human Library is, an opportunity to ask individuals from different communities the questions you’ve never been able to ask.
Titles range from ‘A British Muslim’ to ‘Do Ask, Do Tell: Non-secret Lives of a Married Lesbian’ with everything in between. These stories are available at the Human Library event on Tuesday, October 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Student Center at the Highland Lakes campus.
“This event gives voice to the voiceless and helps end prejudice one conversation at a time. It is harder to discriminate against a group when that group is no longer faceless,” said OCC Librarian and event coordinator, Allison McFadden-Keesling.
Founded in 2000 in Copenhagen, Denmark, a Human Library is a collection of individuals who have been unfairly or negatively labeled and are available for “check out,” creating a cross section of “books” that represent the diversity of our population.
