OCC Students Receive IT Certification in First Exam Offering

OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – Oakland Community College is proud to announce 16 students have been awarded certification through the College’s new Computer Information Systems (CIS) Department Microsoft IT Academy. OCC launched the program last winter at its Auburn Hills campus and provided the first certification exam offering in September.

“The Microsoft IT Academy program is a rigorous process. This is a great accomplishment for our students who received this accreditation on their first attempt,” said OCC President Tim Taylor. “We are pleased with the program implementation which provides valuable certifications to help students prepare for future careers in IT and build their professional resume."

OCC’s Microsoft IT Academy program provides essential computing skills for students in an instructor-led environment intended for IT professionals and developers who build, support, and implement solutions using Microsoft technologies. It also provides curriculum and training that college and career-bound students need to be successful.

“We have seen the immediate benefits of implementing the Microsoft IT Academy program and helping our students earn the Microsoft certification,” said Bernadette McAllister, a CIS faculty member. “Through this program, many students have discovered a deeper interest in technology and anticipate great careers with validation of their networking skills.”

“The combination of classroom discussion and the Microsoft IT Academy rigor really gave us a better understanding with different examples to correlate to real life application. It was so valuable for learning and to see what others are thinking in this setting,” said OCC student David Szpakowski.

“As more students realize the value of certification, we believe the program will continue to grow and these students will begin to proliferate and improve the local workforce,” McAllister added.

The Microsoft certification is recognized globally by academia and business as the premier credential for individuals seeking to validate their knowledge, skills and abilities related to networking and Microsoft Technology applications.
