You study all week for an upcoming quiz and walk into class feeling well prepared. The second you look down at the test, you draw a blank. Does this scenario sound familiar?
Test anxiety can be a big problem for students of all ages, especially when it comes to midterms and finals. Oakland Community College counselors offer these six tips to help overcome test anxiety and empower excellence!
- Be prepared – Ask your instructor if tests are publisher-based to help with note taking. Studying throughout the semester is better for anxiety – and results – than cramming for every test you take.
- Arrive early – Use this time to pick a seat where you won’t be distracted. Take a few minutes to look over your notes and take a few deep breaths to relax.
- Read directions carefully – Slow down. Get focused. There’s nothing worse than solving for “x” then discovering the test question asks for “y.”
- Focus on positivity – Take another deep breath and tell yourself “I am doing my best. I’ve got this.”
- Start with the easiest questions – A blank page can add to the anxiety. Pick a question you know the answer to and begin.
- Budget your time – Leave more time for questions that are worth more points.
