Smith Theatre Technical Information

Preface

This booklet is intended to provide answers for prospective visitors to the most common questions concerning the technical aspects of our theatre.

Location of Theatre

The Smith Theatre is located at center of the Orchard Ridge Campus. Enter the campus at the main entrance (which will be on the right) and stay in the right lane. Follow the perimeter road (Campus Drive) for about three-tenths of a mile. When you come upon a road entering from your right (Canyon Crest Drive), look to the left. Turn into the driveway you see. You are looking at the rear entrance and
loading dock of the theatre.

III. General Information:

Location:

The Smith Theatre is located at the heart of Oakland Community College’s Orchard Ridge Campus. The campus is located at 27055 Orchard Lake Road Farmington Hills, MI 48334. Contact the Theatre Manager for a campus map.

Seating:

The theatre has 420 seats all on the main floor, no balcony. Handicapped seating is available please contact the theatre manager for more details.

Dressing Rooms:

Two large chorus dressings on the same level as the stage well lit with mirrors. There are two bathrooms each with a toilet and a sink. A washer and a dryer are available backstage request use from the theatre manager. No smoking, food, or drink in dressing rooms.

Green Room:

A large room located just off stage is available by request ahead of time. The room can be set up in many different ways to accommodate different groups.

Loading:

Load dock is at ground level. It is located on the west side of the theatre and is accessed by a service drive. There are two entrances one that goes directly on stage and the other that enters into the shop. Stage entrance measurements are: 7' 1'' x 3' with a door mullion separating the doors; and the shop entrance measurements are: 7' 9'' x 5' 10''

Parking:

There are nine parking lots on campus. On the campus map you will see lot 5 (short term/disabled parking) and lot 4 (staff parking) are the closest to the Theatre. Both lots are available for use during events. If you are coming in to rehearse lots 1-3 are available or you can contact the theatre manager to make special arrangements to park in lot 4 or 5.

Smoking/Food: 

Do to the health code regulations and College policy, no homemade food or drinks are permitted on campus for events. For catering services  call the Culinary studies Institute at (248) 522-3711.

Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on campus, including non-alcoholic beer. Local ordinances apply. Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages in any form is prohibited, and any persons under the influence of alcoholic beverages or drugs shall be removed. There is no Smoking on any and all Oakland Community College property.

Stage Access:

There are 3 entrances and exits to and from the stage:
1. Loading Dock directly onto stage: 2 doors with a fixed mullion in the middle

Drapes and Soft Goods:

All Curtains are black velour and sewn at 50% fullness

A. Main Curtain:  Is a traveler that open and closes in the middle and can be operated from Stage Left or Stage
Right.

B. Mid-Curtain: Is a traveler that open and closes in the middle and can be operated from Stage Left.

C. Upstage Curtain: Is hung on a track and can be manually pulled from the middle to cover or reveal the Cyclorama

D. Caliper Curtains:

  • Stage Right Caliper Curtain is hung on a track and can be manually pulled from the onstage side to reveal a wall. Height: 24’ 1” and Width: 25’ 9”
  • Stage Left Caliper Curtain is hung on a track and can be manually pulled from the onstage side to reveal an exit to the loading dock. Height: 24’ 1” and Width: 25’ 9”

E. Legs:  Are located both Stage Right and Stage Left and are required to mask backstage.

Cyc Lights are three color units. They are in a square configuration, with two circuits side by side underneath. We provide red, blue, and green color. If you want to double the blue, or use a different gel color, please provide your own color.
