Pre-Apprenticeship Story – Instructor’s Perspective

OCC’s short-term skilled trade training programs are designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain knowledge that qualifies them for an entry-level job in the manufacturing industry. But it can also give students an alternative to a traditional college education.

“A short-term skilled trades program can open doors and make your educational path easier to navigate,” said Patrick Kelly, an instructor for OCC’s 8-week Pre-Apprenticeship Construction (PAC) program.

The PAC program is designed to provide students with the knowledge necessary to launch an entry level job in construction. During the eight weeks, Kelly said the PAC program will cover an introduction to the construction industry, working with hand and power tools, material handling, and basic safety and First Aid.  The training concludes with a week-long hands-on group project that encompasses everything that was learned from the program.

“Apprenticeships can provide you with an opportunity to learn on the job while enhancing technical skills,” Kelly said.

The training program also offers students several certifications like OSHA 30, NCCER credentials and more.

“A skilled trades certification is a valuable tool in your toolbox for success,” added Kelly. He said a “boots on the ground” approach is an important first step in pursuing a career in construction management.

He also points out that the necessary hard work during the training is worth the effort to qualify for a good-paying job in the dynamic construction industry.

Careers in the construction industry offer great pay, benefits, and a real future. There are a wide variety of job positions that typically start as an apprentice, laborer or equipment operator. After more experience, opportunities can lead towards a journeyman or supervisor jobs.
