Automotive Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles are quickly gaining popularity thanks to their environmental benefits, lower fuel cost and increased affordability. OCC has a reputation for training our students for the future, and our automotive program is no exception. In the Summer of 2023, OCC began offering an Automotive Hybrid and Electric Vehicle class to prepare future automotive technicians like YOU to service increasingly popular hybrid and electric vehicles.
Building an electric vehicle
Throughout this course, you will work on a Switch Lab electric vehicle. This three-wheeled kit vehicle has all the operational components for understanding electric vehicle operations.
You will be engaged in hands-on activities that may include: building, tear down, modification, or enhancement of the vehicle. Test driving, diagnosing issues, and programming/reprogramming the car following industry safety protocols are all part of the experience.
What you will learn
The course teaches you to operate and service high-voltage hybrid and electric vehicle designs, using real EVs like Audi electric models, the Ford Fusion Hybrid, and the Chevy Volt. By the end of this course, you will understand:
- Components and systems used in hybrid and electric vehicles
- High voltage batteries
- Motor/generators
- Power inverters
- Charging systems
- Specialized high voltage tools, equipment & gloves
- Digital multimeters
- Isolation test meters
- Proper diagnosis and servicing procedures with an emphasis on safety
