Social Media Guidelines
Follow these best practices when using social media:
- Authenticity is key. Dishonesty will be very quickly noticed in an online setting.
- Be kind and respectful. OCC strongly upholds our core principles of kindness and respect. Comments and messages that contain profanity, harassmentor the like.
- Make sure you are adding value. The best way to encourage engagement and positive conversation
on social media is to write things people will respond to.
- When sharing opinions on social media, be sure you are clear you are representing
yourself and not the opinions of Oakland Community College.
- Make sure you have all the facts before you comment. If you’re not absolutely sure about something, take the time to search and verify
it before sharing it on social media.OCC reserves the right to respond to inaccurate information with correct information.
- Nothing is truly private. Even if you delete a post or comment, it can leave a digital footprint for all to see.Use your judgment and refrain from posting anything risky.
OCC employees, students or contractors who act in a manner inconsistent with Oakland Community College’s social mediapolicy may be subject to discipline up to and including discharge. Employees should also familiarize themselves with OCC’s internal social media resources.
Commenting on OCC Posts
When commenting on the College’s public social media posts, OCC students, employees and representatives are expected to uphold the following rules:
- Avoid saying anything that you would not want your instructors, colleagues or students (current or future) to see.
- Be fair, courteous and respectful, even if expressing a difference of opinion. Remember that what is
inappropriate in the classroom or workplace is also inappropriate online.
- Avoid using profanity. OCC’s pages have filters set up to automatically block this
type of language.
- Don’t use statements, photographs, video or audio that could reasonably be viewed as malicious, obscene, threatening or intimidating, or that might constitute harassment or bullying.
- Issues with OCC employees should be addressed through the proper channelsprior to airing grievances on social media. View our Complaints and Suggestions page for more details and relevant links.
Stay Safe on Social Media
As social media has grown in popularity, so have scams, hacking and other dangers. Follow these tips to stay safe online:
- Be very careful with what you post. Avoid sharing your home address, workplace and other private identifying information.
- Be intentional when sharing your location. Deny sites and apps access to your location whenever you don’t feel comfortable.
- Know how to block and report threatening or inappropriate content.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication for all accounts.
- Use unique and strong passwords and change them often.
- Familiarize yourself with privacy settings on various social media platforms and adjust
them to fit your comfort levels.
- Do not accept friend or follow requests from anyone you do not know.
- Never open unfamiliar links from accounts or people you do not trust.
- If you receive a message or comment that appears to be from OCC that you feel is suspicious or deceptive, do not open it and email Marketing and Communicationsimmediately.
Brand Guidelines
OCC’s logo is protected and copywritten. Use of OCC’s logo and other College images
is limited to College use. Do not use the OCC logo or any other College images on
personal social media accounts unless it is shared from the College for this purpose.
Use of OCC’s name and/or logo to promote a product, cause, political party or candidate
is strictly prohibited.

Contribute and Engage with OCC on Social Media
Social media is a community platform. The College is better when we share content
from our students, employees, alumni and community members. There are many ways to
engage with us:
- Like, comment on and share content
- Post your own content and tag us – we love seeing photos of students at work, beautiful
photos of our campuses, behind the scenes of a classroom or club meeting, and more.
- Use hashtag #OCCollege on your posts.

Are you interested in earning a scholarship while gaining experience in social media content creation? Apply to be a Student Influencer!This program runs on a semester basis.
Host a Social Media Takeover
Want to show off what it’s like to be a student at OCC? Try doing a social media takeover!
Social media takeovers can be effective for recruiting potential students to OCC,
sharing information about clubs and student organizations, making connections and
more. OCC students are encouraged to partner with Marketing & Communications to gain
partial control over OCC’s social media for a day. This may consist of posting photos
and videos, going live, hosting Q&A sessions, and more.
