Resume Resources for Students

Your resume is one of the most important tools in your job search. Whether you're applying for a part-time job, internship, transfer opportunity, or full-time career, a strong resume helps employers quickly see your skills, experience, and potential.

A resume is more than a list of jobs, it's your personal marketing document. A strong resume will:

  • Highlight your skills, strengths, and accomplishments
  • Shows employers how your experience connects to the job
  • Helps you get past online application systems
  • Increases your chances of landing an interview

Even if you don't have much work experience, you can still build a great resume using coursework, projects, volunteer work, and campus involvement.

The Career Services team at OCC is here to help you build, improve, and tailor your resume with both staff support and online tools like Jobscan.

Getting Your Resume Started

Whether you're building it on your own or preparing to meet with the OCC Career Services team, you can follow these steps to get a jumpstart on your resume:

1. Gather Your Information

Brainstorm and create a list of the following information:

  • Past jobs, even if they are part-time or seasonal
  • Volunteer work
  • Class projects
  • Certifications or trainings you've completed
  • Campus activities or leadership roles
  • Technical and workplace skills (like communication, teamwork, Microsoft Office, etc.)

2. Create a Draft

Using a simple, professional format create a draft that focuses on:

  • Clear section headings
  • Bullet points instead of paragraphs or long text
  • Action words and language
  • Specific results, when possible
The internet is a great place to research resume templates, design trends, and more. Many office productivity tools, like Microsoft, may even offer pre-built templates to help you get started.

3. Tailor for Each Job

Always remember to adjust your resume for different positions. Employers look for candidates whose experience matches their job description. This is where tools like Jobscan can help.

Improve Your Resume with Jobscan

Jobscan is a tool that compares your resume to a specific job description and shows you how well they match. It helps you optimize your resume for software tools, called applicant tracking systems (ATS), that many employers use for hiring.

With Jobscan, you can:

  • See how closely your resume matches a job posting
  • Identify missing keywords and skills
  • Improve formatting and readability for ATS tools
  • Get tips on how to better align your experience with the role
  • Search for roles, generate your cover letter, and more
