You can afford OCC

OCC’s tuition rate of $107.00 per credit hour applies to students who reside in Oakland County. Out-of-district students pay $205.00 per credit hour, whether they live in Michigan, another state, or a foreign country. More information about residency status is available from the Admissions Office.

All OCC students also pay a student support fee of $110 per semester, assessed at the time of registration. The Student Support fee helps fund registration and other services utilized by students at the college. This fee is not refundable after the first day of the semester.

In addition to tuition and fees, each student is expected to purchase their textbooks and supplies. The College provides financial aid and numerous scholarship options for eligible students.

Additional Payment Details

Partial payments can be accepted online. A student not enrolled in a payment plan for the term must pay the full amount of tuition and the student support fee by the payment deadline. Students will be dropped from courses not fully covered by payments made on their account. Partial payments cover the student support fee, then tuition and fees for the first registered courses, alphabetically by course name, i.e. ACC, COM, MKT. Deregistration will occur for all students whose balance is not paid in full by the payment due date and not enrolled in a payment plan for the term.

In the Student Account Center, students can grant access to an authorized user(s) to make payments for their tuition and fees. Access to the Student Account Center is from the Make a Payment link in the Financial Information/Student Finance menu in MyOCC. Students who qualify for financial assistance must obtain the appropriate documents from the campus Financial Assistance Office.

High school dual-enrolled and other students whose financial obligations are being met by employers or other third party sponsors must submit the appropriate documents by the payment deadline.

Students who have failed to meet their financial obligation to the College will have a financial hold placed on their records to prevent registration and release of their transcript. These holds will be removed when all obligations are discharged.

Senior Citizen Tuition Discount

If you’re 60 or older, you receive a 20% discount on your tuition. You must be a U.S. citizen and resident of Michigan to receive the discount. You also must provide proof of your age before the semester begins when you want to receive the discount.

2022 - 2023 Cost of Attendance Chart

When developing your budget, it’s important to keep in mind that tuition isn’t the only cost of going to college. You’ll need books and supplies, gas for your car, and daily living expenses. We list typical costs in our Cost of Attendance chart, although your situation may be different.

Fortunately, you don’t have to pay for everything all at once. OCC offers a convenient Tuition Payment Plan that spreads tuition cost over two or three payments during the semester. You pay no interest - just a small processing fee. We’ve provided answers to some frequently asked questions about the Tuition Payment Plan. You also can get more information at the Cashier’s Office on any OCC campus.

Financial Aid

There are basically four types of financial aid:

  • Scholarships, including scholarships through the OCC Foundation. You don’t have to pay these back.
  • Federal grants, which you don’t pay back.
  • Student loans, which you do have to pay back.
  • Work-study, which involves working at OCC while you take classes.
  • OCC also participates in six federal financial aid programs for veterans.

To receive most financial aid, you must be registered for at least 6 credit hours. This is considered half-time status.

In addition, to receive most financial aid you must meet federal eligibility requirements. That’s because the federal government is the primary source for financial aid. Where the federal government isn’t the funding source - like with private scholarships - you don’t have to meet its eligibility requirements.

FAFSA

The key to unlock most financial aid is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as FAFSA. It’s an online form you should fill out even if you don’t think you qualify for aid based on financial need. Why? Because not all aid requires financial need. Almost all students at least qualify for federal student loans.

The deadline for Michigan students to complete the FAFSA is March 1 by midnight CT for the upcoming fall semester. Don’t wait until the last minute to start filling it out. You’ll need to gather some records (likely parent records as well), and the form itself takes some time.

You must renew your FAFSA every year you attend OCC or a transfer school, and wish to be considered for federal student aid.

So What’s the Bottom Line?

How much will you actually pay to attend OCC? Our Net Price Calculator provides an estimate. It starts with the cost of attendance, then subtracts grant and scholarship aid it estimates you will receive.

The resulting number is just an estimate of how much you’ll pay. But it can be helpful as you make plans to attend OCC.

For More Information

The federal government, which supplies much of the money for student financial aid, offers many great resources and helpful information. Here are a few of its most useful publications and websites:

  • How Financial Aid Works is a publication that explains the process from start to finish.
  • Types of Financial Aid is a publication that discusses the kinds of aid available from the federal government and other sources.
  • Federal Student Aid is a website that has extensive information for students thinking about attending college, students in college, and parents.
