OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – Oakland Community College (OCC) faculty members Bryan Dubin and Dennis Quist were recently awarded Randahl Agency Meemic Grants to attend educational conferences supporting academic professional development.
The Randahl Agency Meemic Grant was started in 2014 between long-time partners OCC and the Randahl Agency. The grant offers $300 for OCC faculty to attend conferences to keep their discipline current. The application process involves a brief essay on the conference and how it would improve their classroom.
“The Meemic Insurance Agency has been in business over 65 years and only insures the educational community,” said Managing Director Rick Pinkos, Randahl Agency. “We were founded by teachers, for teachers. This is one of our ways to give back to the community and encourage innovation among faculty.”
Dubin, a 13-year faculty member, teaches Political Science, American Government and International Relations at OCC’s Highland Lakes. He will be headed to Portland, Oregon, to attend the American Political Science Association Teaching and Learning Conference focused entirely on education and teaching political science. He shares his love for teaching at the community college level and is excited to learn more through discussion and hearing from colleagues at the national level.
Quist, a second-year faculty member, teaches General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at OCC’s Orchard Ridge campus in Farmington Hills. Quist is attending the Biennial Conference on Chemical Education at the University of Northern Colorado. The conference is solely dedicated to “how to teach college chemistry” and is focused on new methods, equipment and classroom practices. His goal in attending is “resource acquisition and classroom teaching methods” and wants to continue his education on education in the classroom. Quist plans to put together a presentation and share his learnings with division colleagues, as well as implement them into his classrooms.
