EMS Program Admission Information

Prior to enrolling in any EMT-Basic, EMT-Specialist or Paramedic classes, students must complete the following:

1. Fill out an Application for Admission and be accepted to OCC. (no fee)
2. Attend an orientation and apply for admission to the EMS program (no fee). Attendance at an orientation does not guarantee registration into the program. Registration is open on a first-come, first-served basis. It is incumbent on the student to register when the registration period opens.  Call the Program Secretary at (248) 232-4090 for information on orientation or to be placed on the orientation list.
3. Take the  English Placement Tests and test into ENG 1510, or have a passing ENG 1510 or higher. You must also complete all other college required placement testing.
4. Be at least 18 years of age to take the National Registry exams at all levels.
5. Have no disabilities which might affect your ability to deliver prompt and efficient care to the ill or injured.
6. All applicants to the EMS program are required to show evidence of good physical health. Current health forms, including drug screen are required for all clinical levels.  Health exams and inoculations can be obtained from your family doctor or any other health care provider.
7. Criminal background clearance forms must be submitted and no exclusionary factors may be present in order to be accepted into the program (see the current OCC Catalog under EMS programs or item#10 below).
8. Students must begin at the Basic level and pass each required EMS course with an 80% or better to enroll in the next higher level of the EMS program.  All BIO classes must be completed with a 70% or better in order to be considered for advancement in the program or successful completion.
9. Students must pass all required EMS courses with an 80% or better and all BIO classes with a 74% or better to be eligible to take the National Registry exams at each level.
10. Under Michigan law, Public Act 179 or 1990, the Michigan Department of Public Health may deny a license to anyone who has obtained, possessed, used or distributed drugs; is physically or mentally incapable of performing his or her prescribed duties; has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony reasonably related to and adversely affecting to ability to practice in a safe and competent manner. Contact the EMS program if you need more information regarding this Act.
11. Have read the Oakland Community College EMS Handbook. The acknowledgement on the last page must be signed and turned into the EMS office.
