CPR & ACLS Training

CPR & ACLS Training

Basic Life Support (BLS)

The OCC EMS Program offers monthly Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training through its affiliation with the American Heart Association (AHA). The BLS Course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED

A CPR card, which remains current for two years, is issued to every student that successfully completes the required written and practical skills examination. Students will also receive a high quality barrier device Pocket Mask to keep upon completion.

Content covered in this course includes:

  • Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • How to help and assist a choking victim
  • In-depth CPR training for adults, children and infants
  • Use of barrier devices
  • Basic anatomy of the heart and respiratory system
  • Early recognition of strokes and heart attacks

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

The OCC EMS Program offers ACLS training through its affiliation with the American Heart Association.  Upon successful completion of this ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies.

This course highlights the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication, systems of care, recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

An ACLS card, which is valid for 2 years through the American Heart Association, is issued to each student that successfully completes the program.

Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts:

  • Proficiency in Basic Life Support care
  • Recognizing and initiating early management of pre-arrest conditions
  • Managing cardiac arrest
  • Identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes
  • Recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care
  • ACLS algorithms
  • Effective resuscitation team dynamics.
