Course Description:

A training program designed to provide the knowledge and skills officers need to administer and supervise in-service firearms training. Including training drills, safety protocols, “trouble shooting” student issues, and instructor development skills.

Instructor:

Bruce M. Coxworth, Flint Police Department (Retired). Mr. Coxworth was the primary Firearms Instructor and Range master for the Flint Police Department as well as the Flint Regional Police Academy. He is a Sigarms qualified Range Master and a Law Enforcement Instructor for Handgun, Shotgun and Rifle. Mr. Coxworth has served as an Undersheriff and Director of the Michigan Chapter of the International Association for Counter-Terrorism and Security Professionals and is a current member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors. He held the rank of Provost Sergeant with the US Army Military Police and was a small arms instructor for the US Army. Mr. Coxworth has contributed significantly to conceptualizing, designing, supervising the construction of, and supervising the operations of two multi-jurisdictional Law Enforcement specific firearms range’s; and has contributed to make significant contributions to law enforcement firearms instruction since he conducted one of the first “Patrol Rifle” courses in the state of Michigan in the spring of 1997.

Required Equipment:

  • Laptop (for class)
  • Department Issue Patrol Rifle with sling
  • Department Issue Service Pistol with 3 magazines and standard duty belt with equipment
  • At least six rifle magazines 20 rounds or greater – unless lesser mandated by Department
  • 1000 Round Rifle ammunition, 250 rounds handgun ammunition
  • Weapon cleaning equipment
  • Shooting mat
  • Wet weather gear
  • Insect repellent/sun screen
  • Personal protective equipment – Approve Range Shooting glasses, Earplugs/muffs, Medications – Epi Pen (if necessary) ball cap

OPTIONAL – Binoculars, spotting scope, sunglasses, coolers, and personal folding style lawn chair, easy up type lawn canopy – sun shelter for breaks during training to prevent heat injuries.

NOTE: This course is physically challenging requiring field craft exercises involving running/carrying equipment, sprints to known distances, immediately assuming various firing positions and timed (accurate) target engagements. The course will progress quickly and focus on movement drills alone and in concert with additional officers, transition drills, reloading exercises, moving to and from cover, advancement and tactical retreat to cover.
