Students Connect in LIVE Q&A with Astronauts on Space Station

 WHAT  

Oakland Community College and Lake Orion High School students have the rare opportunity, on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to ask questions of two astronauts currently residing on the International Space Station. This event includes college and high school students in live Q&A downlink with alumnus serving in space.
 WHO  
  • ASTRONAUT (1)Andrew “Drew” J. Feustel - Raised and educated in Lake Orion, Feustel attended OCC’s Auburn Hills campus from 1983-1986, graduating Cum Laude with an Associate in Science degree. Feustel was selected to be an astronaut by NASA in 2000 and has already logged more than 30 days in space with over 42 hours in spacewalks.
  • ASTRONAUT (2)Richard "Ricky" R. Arnold – Arnold’s in-flight education downlink is an integral component of NASA’s Year of Education on Station, which provides extensive space station-related resources and opportunities to students and educators. The Maryland native worked in the marine sciences and as a teacher in his home state, as well as in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.
  • OCC TEACHER/MENTOR Spence Martin – Feustel’s former OCC teacher, early mentor and current OCC faculty member kicks off event and talks about Feustel’s early days in the classroom.
  • Dignitaries, VIPs and 180 STUDENTS/FUTURE LEADERS – OCC and Lake Orion High School students participating in live event supported by NASA. Additional 900 Lake Orion High students participating from home classrooms.

9:40 a.m.: Lake Orion High School students arrive at OCC
9:45-10:20:  Welcome and video presentation prior to Downlink – lift off footage, life at the space station, and academic and STEM leadership insights
10:25-10:45:  Live downlink (20 minutes)
10:45-11:00: Closing remarks and discussion
11:00-12:00:  High school students tour OCC science/engineering buildings
12:00-12:30:  High school students lunch at OCC
