OCC is committed to fire service training and education. We established the Oakland Fire Training Institute in 1990. This program offers fire based degree and certificate programs. Get initial and advanced training in the fire service.

The degree program leads to an associate in applied science degree. New or experienced in this field? Gain an academic background that prepares you to work in the fire science area. Or earn credentials toward a promotion.

Certificate of Achievement

The Certificate of Achievement is a validation of employability of students with specific work-related skills. Candidates for a Certificate of Achievement must have completed the specified courses identified within the academic program section of the catalog with an overall 2.00 grade point average and a minimum of 10 credit hours at OCC.

Students who have successfully completed their State of Michigan Fire Fighter I and II certifications will be granted credit for FFT 1520, FFT 1540, FFT 2510, EMS 1200, and PER 1590

Job Market Outlook

Employment of fire fighters is projected to grow 7% through 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Physically fit applicants with paramedic training will have the best job prospects.

Eligibility Information

Prospective students must meet standard OCC eligibility requirements. There is an open admissions policy, however in most cases a placement test and new student orientation must also be completed. Students should meet with a counselor before attempting this plan of study.

Programs are primarily offered on the Auburn Hills campus. And for Online students, OCC's Learning Management System, D2L, is available 24 hours a day.

Credential Received

OCC's Fire Fighter Technology program offers a comprehensive curriculum to help prepare you for work in the fire service. Program graduates earn an Associate in Applied Science degree.

Graduation from OCC's Fire Fighting Technology program exceeds the educational entrance requirements for the Fire Academy at Oakland Community College or other Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council (MFFTC) approved Regional Training Center's. Additional entrance requirements are available at OCC's Fire Training Institute.
