OCC is holding auditions for Mrs. Packard, by Emily Mann.
Mrs. Packard is a play about the true story of Elizabeth Packard, a woman who was committed to an asylum by her husband in 1860 for her liberal beliefs. She subsequently battled for her freedom and the rights of women and the mentally ill. The play uses a non-linear structure, cutting between Mrs. Packard's time in the asylum, the trial she fought to gain her freedom, and her later activism for women's and patients' rights.
CASTING ROLES:
- Elizabeth Packard: The protagonist and the titular character, a wife and mother who is committed to the
asylum by her husband for her "liberal" religious views.
- Reverend Theophilus Packard: Elizabeth's conservative, Calvinist minister husband who believes her views endanger
their children's spiritual welfare and has her committed.
- Dr. Andrew McFarland: The superintendent of the asylum who oversees the patients, including Mrs. Packard.
- Mrs. Bonner: A matron at the asylum who has interactions with Elizabeth.
- Mrs. Tenney: The matron of the 7th ward in the asylum and a friend to Elizabeth.
- Mrs. Chapman: A fellow patient in the 7th ward and a friend to Elizabeth.
- Mrs. Dole: A witness for the prosecution during Elizabeth's trial for insanity.
- Sarah Rumsey: Another witness for the prosecution.
- Ensemble Cast: Possible roles for other patients, attendants, doctors, and family members who support the main story.
