CLYDE HARNACK SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship Classification: Fire
General Information: Clyde Harnack, a resident of the City of Royal Oak, had a love of the fire service and was unable to attain his dream of becoming a firefighter due to being mentally disabled. He was often found at the Royal Oak Fire Department's stations, where the fire firefighters accepted him as part of their family, allowing him to assist in whatever tasks that would not jeopardize his safety.
Tragically, Clyde was senselessly gunned down on August 14, 1991, by a man he did not know while walking down Thirteen Mile Road.
A scholarship was named in Clyde's honor as a final tribute to the man who had become a popular figure and volunteered for almost every event in the City of Royal Oak. This scholarship is awarded annually and specifically assists young people attain their dreams of going into fire service.
HONOR AND DEDICATION FIRE FIGHTER SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship Classification: Fire
General Information: This scholarship was established by an anonymous donor who wishes to support those dedicated persons who are willing to be trained and serve as firefighters. There are currently individual scholarship awards of $1,000 available to candidates who are pre-service (has not previously worked in the fire service), or is not currently working in the fire service.
Priority will be given to non-traditional candidates (as defined by the candidate). A brief essay must be submitted with the scholarship application that describes why the candidate needs a scholarship, and describing financial hardship and/or other challenges.
JAMES LaBUHN SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship Classification: Police & Fire
General Information: The Michigan Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators has established an annual educational scholarship grant program. Awards will be made each year to high school graduates to assist in paying tuition at accredited institutions whether they be a vocational/technical school, a community college or four year college/university. Two grants, each in the amount $1,000.00 will be made annually.
Applicants must be in the 12th grade and have credits to graduate from high school and have applied or been accepted to an accredited college or vocational /technical school. Awards will be made on basis of need and on intent to enter the field of fire science or related field in law enforcement, fire service, legal community or insurance.
NORTHWOOD ANCIENT-CRAFT LODGE 551 SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship Classification: Police & Fire
General Information: The Northwood Ancient-Craft Lodge 551 of Free and Accepted Masons of Madison Heights Police and Fire Academy Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship annually, which is alternated between an eligible police and fire cadet every other year, to qualified applicants from the Oakland Police Academy and the Oakland Fire Training Institute.
To be eligible for this award, applicants must be enrolled in either the Oakland Police Academy or the Oakland Fire Training Institute at Oakland Community College and have demonstrated financial need (determined by the OCC administrators of the Academy or the Institute). Furthermore, applicants must have demonstrated leadership qualities (determined by the OCC administrators of the Academy or the Institute) and be available to meet the donors at an informal dinner in their honor at the donors’ lodge, within six months of graduation, on a date that is mutually agreeable for the lodge and the recipient.
