Safety, prevention and protection for all children this summer is the focus of Child ID Kit Day sponsored by OCC, June 17. The College’s Student Engagement program together with the Auburn Hills Masonic Lodge will host the free event from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at OCC’s Auburn Hills Campus.
The event is open to the public, for children age 0 to 17, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Children and their parents will progress through a series of stations where the latest techniques and computer technology are used to record a child's unique characteristics in as little as ten minutes. Each station is hosted by a different student organization, some with free food, games, prizes, face painting and other activities for children.
The "Child ID Package" includes a photo ID card, Amber Alert profile, a complete set of laser scanned fingerprints, recorded interview, Toothprints® Dental Impression, and mouth DNA from cheek cells in saliva which also provides an exclusive trace scent for trained canine search and recovery teams.
"This event will provide parents with useful safety tools while also allowing OCC student leaders a great opportunity to give back to our local communities," says OCC Student Development Coordinator Jessica Lizardi. "Having child ID and safety information is important in prevention efforts and critical to public safety officials when they are working to find a missing child."
The information collected at the event contains comprehensive information critical in expediting law enforcement efforts to help locate a missing child. The program also helps to educate families about abduction prevention and safety.
"Many students on campus have children so we have added additional Student Engagement programs which provide value to our students with families. This event, hosted by a number of student organizations, also introduces children to the idea of college at a young age while also supporting fellow students who are parents," says Tim Taylor, President, Auburn Hills Campus.
All materials gathered during the Child ID Program are given to the parents or guardians upon completion. No identification information is kept, copied or given to any government authority unless the parent or guardian chooses to do so in an emergency. It is recommended that families update their Child ID Packages every two years.
