OCC to Offer Courses at Focus:HOPE's Detroit Campus
- Incoming college freshman are invited to attend "Steps for Success College Fair" to help them succeed in their first semester at OCC with additional study skills, time management and life skills supports.
- Free event, Wednesday, November 16, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Focus:HOPE's campus.
- Opportunity to meet with counselors, admissions staff, financial aid officers and program staff.
- OCC is waiving the course fee for Computer Literacy (CIS 1000) for program participants.
OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – Oakland Community College (OCC) together with Focus:HOPE and Detroit Promise are holding the "Steps for Success College Fair" on Wednesday, November 16, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Focus:HOPE. 1400 Oakman Boulevard, Detroit. Incoming college freshman and prospective students are invited to attend.
Steps for Success is a dual enrollment program which prepares students for a successful college experience. The program combines support services provided by Focus: HOPE with classes taught by OCC instructors in Mathematics, English, Computer Skills, and College Success Skills at the Focus: HOPE campus in Detroit.
The program provides additional supports teaching new study skills, time management strategies and useful life skills. Developmental classes to boost proficiencies in English, math, and computer skills are also offered. In addition, OCC is offering Computer Literacy (CIS 1000) at no cost to program participants as the course is not eligible for financial aid.
The Steps for Success College Fair features program information from OCC counselors and faculty, on-site applications and information on placement testing. OCC representatives from financial aid, enrollment services and outreach will also be available answer questions.
Focus:HOPE case managers will also be available to talk about support services such as child care and transportation assistance and vision testing. Representatives can also provide Detroit Promise scholarship details and how the award can apply to the Steps for Success program.
Snacks, drinks and door prizes will be given away.
"Steps for Success" is a selective program and students must qualify based on placement test scores and a Focus:HOPE interview. Students enrolling in the program who do not live in Oakland County will be charged out-of-district rates.
