OAKLAND COUNTY, Michigan – Oakland Community College leaders presented an overview of OCC’s innovative policy
governance model at a national conference Oct. 24-27.
Leading a discussion on a new governance model adopted by OCC’s Board of Trustees at the Association of Community College Trustees Leadership Congress in New York were OCC Board of Trustees Chair John McCulloch, Chancellor Peter Provenzano and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and General Counsel Eileen Husband.
Nearly 2,000 college trustees, presidents, chancellors, government officials, foundation representatives, and experts gathered to exchange critical information and ideas on successful new models, innovations and programs. The event theme was “Partnerships: Building Blocks to Student Success.”
“The governance model is the cornerstone of the college’s collaborative culture,” McCulloch said. “At OCC, we work collaboratively to set our goals and rigorously evaluate accomplishments of the college.”
OCC’s model incorporates aspects of the John Carver Policy Model, which is designed to empower boards to fulfill their obligation of accountability for the organizations they govern. It allows OCC’s Board of Trustees to focus on the larger issues through four broad policy categories:
- Results
- Board/CEO Relationship
- Executive Limitations on CEO
- Board Governance Process
“In true collaborative fashion, our decision making ensures there are shared voices, opinions and accountability for continuous improvement of academic quality,” Provenzano said. “Our policies have set the tone for the administration to create a collaborative environment. We are now working closely together to get things done with the right people in the room, building trust, and focusing on student success, accountability, and efficiency to meet the ever-changing demands of students and employers.”
