Education professionals from throughout the Midwest will gather at Oakland Community College (OCC) on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, as the College proudly hosts an inaugural Midwestern Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Conference on Bridging Equity: Creating Innovative Spaces for K-12 and Higher Education.
Conference Chair and OCC Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Kristina Marshall explains the conference offers a transdisciplinary meeting of teachers, administrators and faculty members, spanning educational settings from grades K-12, two-year community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. The conference committee members represent the five Midwest states: Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin as well as the full complement of diverse educational settings.
“We are thrilled to host this unique regional event to improve dialogue and share best practices in the delivery of student services,” says Marshall. “This conference brings together education professionals from diverse educational settings who typically operate within their own separate sphere of influence. The novel nature of educators—regardless of the educational setting—gathering to share cutting-edge teaching and learning strategies is not only a rare occurrence but is potentially vital in the evolving landscape of meeting student needs.”
Conference Topics
The conference keynote speaker is Kurt Russell, 2022 National Teacher of the Year, addressing the state of DEI in education. Other sessions include:
- Understanding Student Rights and Accessibility Challenges Between K12 and Higher Education
- Supporting Learners Impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences
- Highlights and Detours Towards an Equitable Educational Experience in K-12 and Higher Ed
- How Implicit Bias and Stereotypes Influence Student Success

The cost of the conference is $175 which includes access to all sessions and associated resources; continental breakfast and lunch; and networking with professional colleagues. Participants will receive certificates of attendance for eight hours and State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) will be awarded through the Oakland Counseling Association.
