Student News
It is my first issue as Speakeasy faculty editor, and I am excited to bring this work
to you. My goal is to publish quality writing and visual art produced by students
and staff affiliated with the Auburn Hills campus of OCC. Writers and artists in this
issue include students, staff, and even a few alumni. I’ve also included work from
our April 2009 Writing from the Edge show, a dialogue between poets and images from
the forgotten corners of our campus.
I want to thank Jessica Newman, who helped me select the “Who Am I” poems from Valencia
Vanner and Bobby Tenorio for the 2008 student poetry prize. Jessica has partnered
with me to help bring about a resurgence in interest in poetry on our campus this
year. I am grateful for her stake in, and enthusiasm, for, this venture.
I also want to thank my colleagues in the Auburn Hills Department of English for the
opportunity to edit Speakeasy, Dean Henry Tanaka for his undying support for writing
related events on campus, and President Pat Dolly for her belief in bringing art to
students.
And than you, dear reader, for supporting Speakeasy through readership and submissions.
Keep writing!
