Kids Cooking 101 class scheduled for May 20

Spring is a time of new growth and no better time to explore a variety of cooking classes at Oakland Community College. The classes, offered as part of OCC’s Continuing Education program, provide opportunities to discover your inner chef in a fun and informative environment. Spring classes are held at the College’s Royal Oak and Auburn Hills campuses.

Community Culinary Classes  

  • Rolled Sushi- In this beginner’s sushi-making course, learn tips and tricks for three different types of rolled sushi, including California rolls and thick Futomaki rolls. 
    Date: Saturday, March 25 | 10 a.m.-noon

  • Substitutions for your Favorite Meals-This class shows how to make your favorite meals healthier by using less cheese, meats and oil, and more vegetables, applesauce and yogurt.
    Date: Wednesday, March 29 | 6—8 p.m.

  • All About Squash-Learn how to substitute squash for pasta, bread and other favorite dishes, as well as how to store and prepare this healthy alternative.

  • Cooking for a Mediterranean Diet-Demonstration Prepare nutritious, tasty and stress-free meals following the Mediterranean diet. This diet utilizes in-season produce and protein. Learn fundamental skills for a lifetime of healthy cooking.
    Date: Thursday, April 27 | 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

  • Kids Cooking 101: Kitchen Skill Development for Children 6-16 years old-Learn the skills necessary to build a great relationship with food and cooking, including proper use of knives and assorted kitchen hand tools, basic cooking terminology, reading and following recipes, and proper sanitation methods. Knives will be provided to those who do not bring their own.  
    Date: Saturday, May 20 | 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

 Food Service Professional Classes 

OCC offers the following classes designed for food-service professionals. Both courses are held Feb. 27 at the Royal Oak Campus, 739 S Washington Ave., Room A115. 

  • ServSafe Certification - This course will prepare you for final examinations administered by the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association. 
    Time:9:30 a.m. –5:30 p.m.
    Fee: $125 
  • ServSafe Re-Certification -This course is designed for individuals with limited background and will prepare you for final examinations administered by the Educational Foundation of the National Restaurant Association.
    Time: 1:30–5:30 p.m.
    Fee: $70
