Stretching Your Food Budget When Grocery Shopping

OCC Low-Cost Community Class Showcases Delicious, Healthy Choices and Trip to Grocery Store

With inflation and rising grocery prices, it can be hard to stretch your food budget and eat healthy at the same time. An unusual class featuring an Oakland Community College culinary expert and Henry Ford Health System registered dietician can help people learn to grocery shop on a limited budget, while making healthy food choices.

The class, “Grocery Store Tour - Shop Economically While Eating Healthy,” will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Meijer's Woodward Corner Market, 30955 Woodward Ave, Royal Oak. The cost is $10 per person.

During this grocery store “field trip,” participants will practice label reading, weighing foods to visualize how much a pound really is, and comparing costs betweenPhoto of woman shopping for groceries whole produce, pre-sliced, frozen and canned. The course instructors include Dawnmarie Yelcho, OCC’s executive director of culinary and hospitality, and Shiseida Beeler, a registered dietician with Henry Ford Health System.

“It can be hard making heathy food choices when shopping on a budget, but that is even more difficult now with the rising costs of groceries,” said Yelcho. “During this grocery store trip, Shiseida and I will focus on how to save money when shopping for a family while continuing to eat healthy.” Please bring a pad of paper and pen, a list of any products in which individuals would like the instructors to look at and wear comfortable, walking attire for grocery shopping.”
