Phi Theta Kappa
The mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize academic achievement of college students and to provide opportunities for them to grow as scholars and leaders.
PTK 2024/2025 Election
An election will be held from April 23 through April 26, 2024, for the Executive Board of Oakland Community College’s PTK. The term for these positions includes Fall 2024 through Winter 2025 semesters.
Election Time-line and Candidate Selection process
Any currently enrolled members of PTK who meet the eligibility requirements may apply
to run for officer positions of the Oakland Community College chapter of PTK.
PTK Officer Duties
- Preside over all business meetings.
- Approve documents.
- Lead meetings and create agenda.
- Coordinate the preparation and implementation of the college project.
- Discuss hallmark awards and 5 star competitive edge program.
- Meet with campus administrator to determine college project.
- Plan and organize new member orientation and induction ceremonies.
- Organize and submit 5 star chapter development plan, transfer edge, and other courses offered on the official web page.
- Oversee award entry preparation.
- Appoint and establish any necessary committees.
- Serve as an ex-officio member on all committees.
- Present business to the organization.
- Represent the organization at all times.
- Appoint a committee to review and/or revise the chapter bylaws annually.
- Appoint a committee to prepare the Annual Report to be sent to Headquarters each spring.
- The Co-President, if applicable, or the VP of Leadership, will serve in the capacity of President in the case of a resignation or vacancy, until an officer vote can be held.
- Overrides or vetoes agenda topics.
- Reviews and leads revisions on chapter bylaws.
- Perform all duties of the president in the event of his/her absence.
- Take roll at the meetings.
- Coordinate all committees.
- Head the committee reviewing the chapter bylaws and the annual report
- Act as program chairman.
- Create leadership training workshops to improve teamwork.
- Coordinate the chapter’s participation in the Honors Case Study Challenge.
- Coordinate the preparation of the chapter’s Honors in Action Awards entries.
- Educate chapter about PTK Connect and ptk.org.
- Implement procedures for officers to attend the regional convention, international convention and international honors convention.
- Lead and organize campus projects by utilizing various resources.
- Motivate students to get involved by recruiting members.
- Organize the completion and submission of the Hallmark Awards applications (honors study topic, college project and individual/chapter award entries) due by the end of December and the beginning of February every year.
- Plan and organize service hallmarks that benefit the campus.
- Assist in overseeing projects.
- Direct the chapter in the use of parliamentary procedure for meetings.
- Establishes list of items that must be purchased for events.
- Keep a record of attendance of meetings and events.
- Keep a record of events and activity information.
- Maintain a calendar of events.
- Place a copy of all historical records in the chapter files or share access to electronic files with the chapter advisor at the end of the officer term.
- Take notes and send them out to members.
- Take and present minutes at each chapter meeting.
- Update email addresses of officers and active members.
- Meeting minutes should be typed and sent out within 48 hours of the meeting being reported.
- Scheduled meetings will be determined by the group. Meetings may be postponed or rescheduled if conflict arises. New meeting dates will be posted on social media or OCC PTK webpage/digital corkboards.
- Coordinate the preparation of the honors study topic award entry.
- Oversee all honors study topic activities and recognize scholarships.
- Organize participation in Honors satellite seminar.
- Prepare reports with Phi Theta Kappa golden key news and Phi Theta Kappa scholarships.
- Work on Pinnacle Scholarship Award Programs.
- Educate members about the PTK Edge Programs.
- Record all events for history log.
- Organize service events.
- Work with and create community partnerships.
- Provide information about volunteer opportunities.
- Coordinate the chapter’s C4 (Community College Completion Corp) events.
- Implement strategies to recruit and increase membership.
- Encourage events with other chapters within Michigan Region.
- Coordinate the photograph of all chapter events/functions and obtain signed photo-released
waivers from participants.
- Add photos from chapter events to social media accounts after each event.
- Maintain the chapter’s social media accounts, email account and newsletter (with the assistance of the Campus Ambassadors.
- Decorate for events/fundraisers.
- Organize and support.
- Should be four Campus Ambassadors, and they should report to the director.
- Post announcements of all chapter event details.
- Publicize events by creating posters, signs, flyers and posting them. Work with the advisor.
- Prepare yearbook and chapter photograph for award competition at the regional convention in May.
- Maintain social media accounts
- Keep members updated on all upcoming fundraising events.
- Coordinate the scheduling of fundraising events.
- Head the planning of fundraising events.
- Maintain records of all events and fundraisers.
- Keep track of the profit of specific fundraising events to be used in planning future events and for updating chapter records via the Secretary.
- Submit appropriate documentation to advisor(s) for approval of reimbursements, event expenses, etc.
- Represent the Alpha Omicron Kappa chapter at every activity that is required by OCC’s Student Government association.
- Relay information about our projects and events to OCC’s Student Government association.
- Relay information about events, changes in student engagement, and projects discussed during Student Government meetings to the chapter officers.
- Forward important Student Government meeting information (agendas, minutes, flyers, etc.) to the chapter officers.
- Serve as a liaison between OCC’s Registered Student Organizations and our chapter.
Membership Requirements
How can you become a Phi Theta Kappa member?
- Have a Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at Oakland Community College
- Have 12 completed semester hours at Oakland Community College
- Currently be enrolled at Oakland Community College
